Artist's Biography - Michael Schofield
Michael Schofield
Michael Schofield was born in Orlando, Florida October 10, 1947 and moved with his family to California that same year. He began painting and studying watercolor while still in high school. His art teacher recognized his very special talent and for nearly two years tutored Schofield privately to develop his talent in the watercolor medium. After high school, Schofield went into the military, and then on to the Harris School of Advertising Art in Nashville, Tennessee. During the summers, he studied with well-known watercolorist John Pike (a contemporary of Robert Wood) in Woodstock, New York.

Schofield soon opened his own art studio where he taught and painted for 12 years. Upon his return to California in 1980, he opened his own silkscreen printing studio in order to create his own original serigraph editions. An original serigraph utilizes the silkscreen printmaking medium. The image is created by stenciling elements of color and imagery onto screens (silk is no longer used). Each screen represents a layer of color and imagery. The image is built successively with every new screen and color that is applied to the paper.

Schofield believes that art is fundamentally communication. He chooses to create more traditional landscapes because it is with this imagery that most people relate. It is imagery that evokes a memory and therefore a feeling. In this manner, the artist and those who live with his art share a common experience.

Schofield taught professionally at Columbia City College, Columbia, Tennessee as well as Watkins Institute, Nashville and privately for 6 years including numerous workshops in 5 states.

His memberships include the Tennessee Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, and International Society for Artists, and is an Associate member of the A.W.S.

He has received 31 regional and national awards and has had 15 one man and group showings.

As a successful artist for several years, Schofield's work can be found in many private and corporate collections. A sampling of them includes: Bank of America; The Library of Congress; Xerox Corporation; Occidental; and 20th Century, Inc. (over 70 pieces).

Collectors include 1,000 public and private collectors in the United States as well as England, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
